Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the region

The provision of Article 15 regarding the Law on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region stipulates that the Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region is the highest representative body of the Diaspora and Serbs in the region.

According to the Law on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, the Assembly consists of 45 Delegates of the Diaspora and Serbs in the region. More details and the methods by which delegates are elected, as well as cases where the mandates of delegates are terminated before the deadline of four years has expired, are agreeably determined by the organisations operating in the territory of the country, for which a certain number of delegates is to be selected.

With the arrival of the day when the Law on Ministries came into force (‘Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia’, No. 72/ 2012), on 27th July 2012, the Ministry of Religion and the Diaspora ceased to operate (Article 35). The same law stipulates that a special service shall be set up by the Government for the performance of tasks related to issues of importance to the Diaspora. During its session, held on 2nd August 2012, The Government adopted the Regulation on the Establishment of the Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region.

One of the main tasks of The Office is also to create preconditions for further smooth operation of the working bodies, envisaged by the Law on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, primarily of the Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region.
